The road unwinds for about 200km crossing several diversified winemakers:
Chianti D.O.C.G., Chianti
Colli aretini D.O.C.G., Colli Etruria
Centrale D.O.C., Valdichiana D.O.C.
and Cortona D.O.C. Vinsanto
del Chianti D.O.C. and Chianti Colli
Aretini D.O.C. .
By way of Tuscan landscape with vineyards, olive groves, tabacco
cultivations, chestnut groves, and wild forests, both artistic beauty
and archaeological wonders join together. The road goes from S.Giovanni
Valdarno, birth place of Masaccion and leads on towards Montevarchi,
where the Cavriglia park is located.
An incredible variety of habitats characterize this corner of Valdarno.
The open sky mining activity has left a heritage of a lunar like
landscape, and one is left to immagine the plyocenic lake that existed
and which was surrounded by a tropical forest that still today gives
way for fossil findings of tigers, hyenas and mammoth elephants.

The road is embraced by the rows of vineyards that are sculpted
into the hillside, boroughs and castles, close to Cavriglia
and its potected park. It runs through the heart of the Chiantigiani
Mountains and connects to a main road towards Mercatale Valdarno
and continues on through more vineyards and monuments like the Tower
of Galatrona and the Pieve of Petrolo, all the way to Bucine.
At the crossroads of Capannole another road begins between the
castles and olive groves and goes to Pergine and Montozzi, from
where the age old groves that surround the village, produce extra
virgin olive oil. All of Valdarno
and part of Valdichiana can be seen
from nearby Civitella and its fortress.
Starting back from the crossroads of Capannole the road goes directly
to the heart of Valdambra, the Cennina castle, the antique Abbey
of Ruoti and the ancient hillside boroughs of the castle. From Ambra
one can also chose the Via of Montebenichi which crosses that hilly
landscape flaunting its many rural masterpeices perfectly tucked
away in the territory, perfect today for creating Agritourism.

Among the vineyards and olive
groves, the Pieve of Sant Maria in Altaserra,
there is the medieval village with the Stendardi Palazzo (or the
Palazzo of Capitan Goro of Montebenichi who was the military commander
of the Bande Nere in the XVI century), which was restored in the
Aragonese style in the beginning of the 10th century. Following
the main road from Ambra towards la Colonna del Grillo, it opens
with its fields of grapes in the direction of Monte S. Savino, coasting
alongside the historic Castle of Gargonza. From
Monte San Savino you can double back
to Valdichiana all the way the Lucignano, rising in a spiral fashion,
and then to Foiano; after a quick stop at the Temple of Ammannati
at the Well of Chiana, you go up to Cortona with its Etruscan and
Roman archaeological digs, to the Museum of Etruscan Academy and
the beautiful panoramic view of Valdichiana
in its entirety.
And here we are in the heart of Valdichiana with yet another itinerary
within the vast grape vines, olive groves and imposing Leopold style
houses that tell us the story of the valley reclaimed by the Grand
Duke Leopold. Following the state Umbro Casentinese road you'll
encounter Castiglion Fiorentino, with its beautiful plaza, witness
to the genio del Sangallo, which meets up with Arezzo.

This is a medieval city surrounded by hills of vineyards and olive
groves, rising up as the center of 4 small valleys rich in history
and culture, that also produce the highest quality of natural foodstuffs.
Every month there is the Antiquarian Fair that unfolds into the
streets of the historical center. There are two museums here which
are the Etruscan museum that is placed in an Olivetan convent in
the Roman ampitheatre and the well endowed medieval picture gallery;
numerous artistic monuments where one can find works by Piero della
Francesca, Giorgio Vasara and Andrea della Robbia. From Arezzo the
Sette Ponti province unfolds into the Pratomagno.
The beautifully carved and grapevine lined hills here are an example
of perfect harmony between mankind and mother nature. Following
along the fortified rural borough of Borro and then reaching Loro
Ciuffenna, you'll find the Roman Pieve of Gropina, returning then
all the way to San Giovanni Valdarno passing Castelfranco. Further
directions are available from the Information Center situated in
the charming Piazza Grande di Arezzo. Choosing this route does not
cover all the richness that this territory has to offer, but it
does however give you a chance to learn about Aretini wines, the
gastronomy, the people, the hospitality, the traditions, the splendid
nature, the art and the high standard of living in the Terre
di Arezzo (The Lands of Arezzo).
